Arise Interview: Buhari takes delight in ridiculing Igbos, utterances unpresidential — Afenifere

.A look at Buhari’s hailers and his haters

Dayo Johnson Akure

The Yoruba Pan Socio-Political Group Afenifere has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of taking delight in ridiculing Igbos by his unpresidential utterances.

The group’s Secretary General Chief Sola Ebiseni in a statement in Akure in reaction to the President’s interview on Arise as regards IPOB, Afenifere said that ” the President takes delight in ridiculing the Ndigbo which he used IPOB to represent.

“Thus, to him, the Igbo and their territory is just a dot in a circle of the map of Nigeria, which even if the secede could exit to nowhere since the elders and youths of the South-South had assured him of not being part of the secessionist agenda.

“He couldn’t have been reacting to the IPOB but the Igbo who he said had businesses everywhere.

“His utterances were very unpresidential and in the mode of common expressions with some unidentifiable northern organisations.

Afenifere statement entitled ” Our irredeemable President” reads ” Buhari has sheer contempt for Nigerians as an unrepentant tribalist.

“First, his arranged interview on Arise Television is not a substitute for the clamour of Nigerians that the President, as the father of the Federation, should speak to Nigerians in this critical times.

“Secondly, his engagement was full of lies, inconsistencies, contradictions and utter disrespect for the ethnic nationalities including their elected governors.

” He is pathetically unschooled in the constitution which he often claims to guide him in spite of its manifest flaws.

According to the group ” his engagement was full of lies, inconsistencies, contradictions and utter disrespect for the ethnic nationalities including their elected governors.

On the lopsided appointment in the Armed forces, the group said ” the President’s claim that his appointment in the armed forces is based on merit and seniority and not to satisfy geopolitical zones, is a violation of the letters and intendment of the provisions of sections 217-220 dealing with the Armed Forces of the federation and appointments thereto.

“Specifically, Section 217 (3) provides that the composition of the officer corps and other ranks of the armed forces of the federation shall reflect the Federal character of Nigeria.

“In Section 219, all the powers given the President including the appointment of Service Chiefs, is subject to the Act of the National Assembly ensuring the reflection of the Federal character.

” Even his latest appointment of the Chief of Army Staff, is flawed particularly on seniority. The constitution never contemplates nor approve of the situation under Buhari where 90% of the commanding heights of the armed forces and security architecture will be from only northern Nigeria and only the two zones of North East and North West.

” In any case, anyone familiar with the history of Buhari leadership will appreciate that he is the only Nigerian leader, even among military Heads of state, whose government government, himself, second in command as Chief of staff Supreme headquarters (Idiagbon) and top echelon were all northerners. It was after his death that many Nigerians knew Idiagbon was Fulani of Ilorin.

On the governors, the group said that ” the President owned up to the statements of Garba Shehu, his most uninformed spokesman, that the ban on open grazing by the Governors was illegal and he could not make a new statement that would contradict him.

“He is delighted that Governors are Chief Security Officers without any security powers, yet he asked two of the South West Governors to exercise a non-existent powers to deal with terrorists herdsmen who he acknowledged bear arms, even as foreigners , against Nigerian citizens.

“It is pitiful that our President has no solution rather than the braggadocio of re-opening grazing routes in states by repossessing such lands for his beloved herdsmen.

” Let the President be told that the Yoruba people are solidly behind our Governors that not an inch of land in our territory will be carved out for any grazing reserves or cattle Colony.

The group said that ” If the President has any respect for his much vaunted constitution, he will know that he has no such power over land use. Nemo dat quod non habet.

Airborne Geophysical Survey starts in 19 States to ascertain nations accurate deposit of mineral resources

.Nigeria, Israel

Dayo Johnson Akure

IN a bid to unlock and determine the accurate deposits of mineral resources across the country, the Federal government is set to embark on an Airborne Geophysical Survey Activity in 19 States of the federation.

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Hon. Olamilekan Adegbite said this in Akure, Ondo state capital during the Flag off exercise of the Sensitisation Programme in the South West.

The Minister who spoke through the Project Coordinator of Mindiver (World Bank) Project, Engr. Sallim Salaam, said the exercise will cover 112 local government areas across the country, saying it is to determine accurate mineral locations using modern day contemporary aeromagnetic mechanism.

Adegbite listed the states to be covered by the survey to include: Kwara, Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Ogun and Ebonyi. Others are Enugu, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Kaduna, Niger, Kogi, Taraba, Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, Bauchi and the FCT.

He however urged member of the public not the states and Local Governments that would be covered by this survey not to panic because of the “either as a result of the loud noise of the aircraft due to the low flying altitude maintained by the aircraft or the pattern of movement of the aircraft”

According to him the information like this became necessary because of the current security situation in the country so that people do not get misinformed and entertain unnecessary fears that may lead to tension in the society.

He pointed out that the survey would be carried out through the Mineral Sector Support for Economic Diversification (MINDIVER) Project, a World Bank assisted Project under the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development.

Adegbite explained that the survey areas were chosen based on the outcome of the previous survey guided by geological consideration

” The survey will be measuring minor variations in the earth’s magnetic fields and gamma radiations in the soil.

“It is a passive technique that does not involve sending out any signals or sound waves into the ground and therefore remains a very safe aerial survey”

He said that the survey is similar to the previous ones that took place between 2003 – 2007 and 2009 – 2011 which was conducted over the entire country but remained largely unnoticed by most Nigerians.

“This current survey is of high resolution expected to return more details and information on geology that could lead to the discovery of several minerals due to improvement in technology and advancement in knowledge.

“It is slated to start this June 2021 and will run through a period of about eight months but less than a month over a state, depending on weather conditions” he said

He added that the airborne survey activity will kick off from the Ilorin Airport in Kwara State, and that the MinDiver Project is involved in the Airborne Magrad Survey to assist the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development in implementing the road-map for the growth and development of the nation’s mineral resources which had identified lack of adequate geosciences data among other things as constituting huge gap towards attracting investments in the sector.

Adegbite noted that in order to close the huge gap identified in the Ministry’s roadmap militating against investment in mineral resources, the MinDiver Project engaged the services of a South African based company, Xcalibur Airborne Surveys to conduct the higher resolution Airborne MagRad Surveys of selected areas under Proof of Concepts.

He noted that ” these are areas with active mineral titles to help build comprehensive geological knowledge of the areas in order to and assist the owners of the titles with credible data for further exploration”

Why Southern Governors called for national dialogue – Okowa

. Delta Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa (5th right); Deputy Governor of Delta, Deacon Kingsley Otuaro (5th left); Secretary to State Government, Mr. Patrick Ukah (3rd left); Barr. Peter Mrakpo (4th left); Team Leader, Chartered Institute of Information and Strategy Management, Dr. Mustapha Olayinka (3rd right); Membership Director, Chartered Institute of Information and Strategy Management, Adelanke Oyintoke (4th right) and Others, shortly after a courtesy visit on the Governor by members of the institute in Government House ,Asaba. Thursday

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Thursday said that Southern Governors’ Forum’s call for national dialogue was to discuss various issues and challenges currently confronting the country.

Speaking when he received the National Coordinator and members of the Chartered Institute of Information and Strategy Management (CIISM) led by Dr. Mustapha Olayinka, at Government House, Asaba, Okowa noted that there were many agitations for secession due to perceived injustice in the polity.

READ ALSO:The Southern governors’ move

He explained that the proposed national dialogue would discuss and resolve the agitations in the interest of the unity of the country.

According to him, there are too many things going on now in this country but it’s voices that tend to create a challenge for us and we need voices that will unite us as Nigerians.

The governor, however, said that “in seeking for that unity, if we have voices that are getting strong because of one reason or the other, we need to be able to listen to them.

“We need to be able to accommodate those voices and that is why the Southern Governors’ Forum did call for a national dialogue because when people sit together to dialogue with themselves, they can speak their inner minds, they can find ways of resolving.

“So, we truly believe that in the communication process there must be a space for people to air their views and we also advise that there is still a lot of room to talk; so, our people should not take up arms instead of talking with their voices.

“We believe that in taking up arms, we are not doing any good to Nigeria and we are not doing any good to our communities.”

He called on leaders across the country not to stifle the voice of the oppressed but urged them to close ranks and build a consensus to ensure that peace pervaded the nooks and crannies of the country.

“For those of us in the governance space, we also need to continue to hear the people and to give room for people to air their opinions on national issues.

“We believe that if there is a national dialogue, obviously it will help to reduce the tension that we have today as a nation.

“There is no doubt that we are stronger together as a nation and everything possible to keep us together as a nation, the better for us.

“It is for us to be able to manage the current threats in the country in such a manner that we do not lose out at the end of the day. There must be an approach that brings us together where we can talk freely to ourselves and we can ensure that at the end of the day there is justice, fairness, and equity because it is the best for the nation.

“In our communications, let us appeal to Nigerians to know that we are better together than going our ways, but I also believe that as a nation we need to talk to ourselves and be able to listen to the voices of those who feel challenged or oppressed,” the governor stated.

Earlier, Olayinka had told the governor that the delegation was in the state for an induction and capacity-building program tagged “Leadership in the new digital era.”

He said that the objective of the institute was to extend strategic information management to the public and leadership of every organisation.

He commended Okowa for his dexterity in delivering on his SMART and Stronger Delta agenda.

“We have seen a lot you have done in your SMART and Stronger Delta vision for Deltans and recognition of these outstanding accomplishments,’’ he said.

The high point of the visit was the conferment of the `Distinguished Fellow of the Institute” award to the governor.

Ondo PDP knocks Akeredolu for building new governor’s lodge for N2b amidst unpaid worker’s salary

Why I didn’t stay in Governor’s lodge built by my predecessor — Akeredolu

— New lodge built by my predecessor structurally defective., termite infected – Akeredolu

—– PDP on the path of a fruitless incitement

Dayo Johnson Akure

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo state has faulted governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s plan to build a new governor’s lodge for N 2 billion amidst unpaid workers salaries.

Addressing newsmen in Akure, the state chairman of the party, Hon Fatai Adams described the proposed plan as ” not only ridiculous but the surest evidence that the governor has completely lost direction.

Adams said that ” While the present Administration of Akeredolu has a backlog of un-paid salaries of workers, it is proposing to build a 2-billion naira new Government House in Akure.

“This is not only ridiculous but the surest evidence that the Governor has completely lost direction.

“Dr Olusegun Mimiko, Akeredeolu’s predessesor built a very befitting Government House, in 2013, a few years before Akeredolu assumed the reins of government. To spend 2 billion naira of taxpayers money on another Government House at this time is the height of callousness and wastefulness.

“The questions are: has the one built by Dr Olusegun Mimiko in 2013 become so uninhabitable such that a new one is inevitable in this perilous time?

” Considering the terrible economic situation and hunger in the land, is it proper or reasonable for a government to embark on a 2-billion naira project that will only serve very few individuals, when millions of people are languishing in despicable penury and dying without basic healthcare service delivery?

“But again, if a society is not fully informed of the atrocious and pernicious nature of the party in government, the people may always be cajoled or beguiled through a well-oiled and orchestrated propaganda machinery, into believing that the government is working in the interest of the people.

“We wish to assure the people of Ondo State, that the good times they once savoured under the PDP Administration are almost here again.

“We shall not give up or be overwhelmed by the suffering and hopelessness foisted on us by the APC Government, because we can already see light at the end of the tunnel.

Speaking on the resignation of doctors in the state over percentage salaries paid to workers in the state, the chairman said ” we are seriously alarmed by the unfortunate resignation of over 109 medical doctors from the Ondo State public service over the inability of the government to pay the medical personnel their due salaries and hazard allowances as and when due.

“Apart from the failure of government to pay, Governor Akeredolu unapologetically told the Doctors in a widely televised program that the services of the doctors were not indispensable.

” This is worrisome as we all know that we are dealing with the health and lives of our people here.

” I’m sure you’ll all recall that Ondo State was the destination for medical tourism in the South West because of the first class service delivery found here under the PDP Administration.

“According to the Nigerian Medical Association records, no Medical House officer has been employed by the Ondo State Government since 2019, a situation that is responsible for the poor services rendered in the hospitals.

“The available few hands are already overwhelmed and overstretched by the high number of patients coming for medical attention.

“This is very pathetic. Our people are dying unattended to! This portends grave danger especially in a period when all manners of epidemic rear their ugly heads.

Recall that governor Akeredolu at the ground breaking of the new Governor’s lodge to mark his 100 days in office said that the new multi-billionaire naira governor’s lodge built by his predecessor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko had structural defect.

He noted that the former governor’s lodge built by the colonial officers and used by late Dr. Olusegun Agagu was termites infected.

“I called my engineer to look at it and I was told to either bring down the building or part of it. Then we all knew we are going to need a new Governor lodge.

“What we had was a modest three room duplex built by the colonial officers. It was termites infested. It was not suited for anybody to live. My consultant said I should not attempt to remodel it.

Also reacting, the information and Orientation commissioner, Donald Ojogo in a statement said that ” the position of the opposition party had thrived at an inclement path of a fruitless incitement as it incredulously, suggested that Ondo State does not need a befitting Governor’s Lodge.

“It is a conceded fact that an opposition party is at liberty to criticise any Government including of course, the indiscretional display of ignorance on issues of governance.

” The misplaced allusion to the Governor’s Lodge as well as the weak nexus between same and the issue of salaries betrays an unpardonable amnesia on the part of a politcal party. It becomes immeasurably uncanny if such party had left the stage with the most uncharitable legacy of ‘unpaid seven months salaries ‘.

“Perhaps, PDP deserves to know that the envisioned Governor’s Lodge is among the plethora of iconic projects targeted with the yet-to-be-fully accessed BOND. Suggesting therefore, that Government should ‘shelve’ the project for salaries clearly shows a gross lack of knowledge of how Bonds work. They are, as Special Purpose means of funding developmental initiatives, inconvertible to cash, hence undrawable by anyone.

Ojogo said ” Rather than abandon the welfare of workers for months without remorse under any guise, the Ondo State Government led by Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN shall, at all times, evolve ingenious means to address the issue of salaries in the face of excruciating global economic challenges.

Oil Market: Price of Nigeria’s Bonny Light hovers at $71.73 per barrel

Oil

…As OPEC puts nation’s output at 1.344 mb/d

By Udeme Akpan

THE price of Bonny Light, Nigeria’s oil grade, Thursday, hovered at $71.73 per barrel, as the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, puts nation’s output at 1.344 million barrels per day, mb/d.

This showed an excess of $31.73 per barrel, as the N7.89 trillion 2021 budget was based on $40 per barrel and 1.86 mb/d, including Condensate.

However, in its Monthly Oil Report (June), released, yesterday, OPEC, disclosed that Nigeria produced 1.344 mb/d, excluding Condensate, based on information obtained from direct sources.

Nevertheless, the organization said that the nation produced 3.88 mb/d, excluding Condensate, when information obtained from secondary sources are considered.

According to the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, Nigeria has the capacity to produce 300,000 – 400,000 bp/d, which attract the same price as Bonny Light in the global market.

In any case, commenting on global demand, OPEC stated in its latest report that, “Total global oil demand is expected to average 90.6 mb/d. For 2021, world oil demand growth is kept unchanged at 6.0 mb/d, with total oil demand standing at 96.58 mb/d. OECD demand is revised slightly lower on an annualized basis, mainly reflecting lower-than-expected data from OECD Americas and Europe in 1Q21.

“However, initial data for April in both regions, as well as positive mobility developments given easing restriction measures and border openings, encouraged an upward revision to 2Q21 data. This offset most of the 1Q21 downward revision. In the non-OECD, oil demand was revised slightly higher, mainly due to positive 2Q21 data from the Middle East.”

In terms of supply, the report, stated: “For 2021, non-OPEC liquids supply is revised up by 0.1 mb/d from last month’s assessment, and is now forecast to grow by 0.8 mb/d to average 63.7 mb/d. This is mainly due to a faster-than-expected recovery in US liquids production of 2.5 mb/d in March. Additionally, the supply forecast for Norway, China, and Indonesia is also revised up, while the supply forecast in the UK, Brazil, and Colombia is revised down. The main drivers for 2021 supply growth are anticipated to be Canada, Brazil, China, and Norway, while US liquids supply is now expected to only grow by a marginal 0.03 mb/d y-o-y. US crude oil is actually forecast to decline y-o-y by 0.1 mb/d to 11.2 mb/d.”

In a recent interview with Vanguard, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Professorial Chair,  Oil and Gas Economics, and Management, Institute for Oil and Gas Studies, University of Cape Coast. Ghana, Prof. Omowumi Iledare, had said: “The government is commended for the conservative choice of the assumed oil price in the budget estimate. The current price projections, according to Energy Information Administration, EIA, and even OPEC, remain more likely than not to stay within 50 – 60 in a sustainable way, other things being equal. That will certainly provide the buffer if the projected output of 1.86 fails to hold.”

Biden slams FG over Twitter suspension

Biden

By Prince Okafor

The United States President, Joe Biden, has condemned the Federal Government decision to suspend of Twitter operations in Nigeria.

Stressing that the restriction to report, gather, and disseminate opinions and information has no place in a democracy.

According to a statement made available to Vanguard by the U.S Department Spokesperson, Ned Price, it stated that, “The United States condemns the ongoing suspension of Twitter by the Nigerian government and subsequent threats to arrest and prosecute Nigerians who use Twitter.

“The United States is likewise concerned that the Nigerian National Broadcasting Commission ordered all television and radio broadcasters to cease using Twitter.

“Unduly restricting the ability of Nigerians to report, gather, and disseminate opinions and information has no place in a democracy.  Freedom of expression and access to information both online and offline are foundational to prosperous and secure democratic societies.

“We support Nigeria as it works towards unity, peace, and prosperity.  As its partner, we call on the government to respect its citizens’ right to freedom of expression by reversing this suspension.”
