By Ndahi Marama – Maiduguri

Armed members of the dreaded Boko Haram/ISWAP group on Thursday evening sneaked into Damboa Local Government Area of Borno state, killing two Mobile Policemen (Mopol) after setting ablaze their head office located in the town with three operational vehicles.

Also razed down is a grounded operational vehicle belonging to members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF. Reliable sources and residents have said.

Damboa is about 85km drive from Maiduguri, the state capital, but due to closer of 185km Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu, it takes about two days for motorists to reach the town from Maiduguri through other means.

Unconfirmed reports revealed that some of the insurgents also lost their lives in the attack with others went away into Sambisa forest with various degrees of gunshot injuries, although, residents dismissed such claim, insisted that they have not seen any dead body of insurgents on the streets after the attack.

The insurgents in a convoy of about 10 gun trucks stormed the town at about 5:30 pm from eastern frank of Damboa and started shooting sporadically which left many people to scamper for safety, before ground military troops and airforce Task team engaged them to repel the attack.

On 2nd October, 2021, some group of insurgents stormed the town in an attempt to invade an area where hundreds of their surrendered members were camped, even as this fresh attack is coming some few hours ago, when some of the Service Chiefs were in Maiduguri on Friday afternoon to assess the security situation in the theatre.

Unfortunately, during the exchange of gunfire, 5 residents including a primary school pupil  Bintu Audu Buba were killed by stray bullets.

Also killed by stray bullets according to sources were Chiroma Zaki and an unidentified woman visitor who came from neighbouring village to see her relatives residing in Damboa.

Residents, Mallam modu Ali and Yahaya Isah, in a telephone interview with Vanguard correspondent, said, “the insurgents freely sneaked into the town and wreck havoc without swift confrontation from the military who always hang themselves into their barracks.”

They alleged that, unlike before, the military authorities in Damboa are not doing what they are supposed to do in safeguarding residents, as they (military) concentrate much on protecting themselves in their formations.

All efforts to get confirmation from security authorities proved abortive at press time, but a reliable security source who is not authorized to talk to the press confirmed the deadly incident.

Tiwa Savage sex tape, EndSARS, others top Nigeria’s Google Trends in October

Tiwa Savage

By Juliet Umeh

The emergence of a sex tape involving one of Nigeria’s pop stars, Tiwa Savage; a boxing bout involving Tyson vs Wilder; and a protest to honour those who died during the EndSARS protests of 2020, were some of the trending topics that caught the attention of Nigerians on Google in October.

Search trends information is gleaned from data collated by Google based on what Nigerians have been searching for and asking Google.

Google said it processes more than 40, 000 search queries every second. This translates to more than a billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide.#

According to the report released by the search engine, earlier this month, Savage announced she was being blackmailed over a sex tape which was mistakenly uploaded online.

The news caught the attention of her fans in Nigeria and across the world. When the video was later leaked online it sparked conversation both online and offline.

Also, the conclusion of the much-anticipated boxing bout between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder piqued the interest of Nigerian sports fans.

Boxing match reviews and images of Wilder taking beatings and being slammed into the ropes by Fury filled the Internet, prompting fans to search for more.

In the same vein, on October 20, one year after a series of huge protests against police brutality in Nigeria, an EndSARS memorial protest was held.

This was in honour of the victims of last year’s shooting, Nigerian youth and celebrities drove through the Lekki toll gate in Lagos in a memorial automobile procession.

Popular celebrities, Folarin Falana also known as Falz, and Debo Adebayo, also known as Mr Macaroni spearheaded the march.

These were all that dominated Nigerians search interests in the month under review.

However, other interesting searches were World Teachers’ Day, the releases of hit songs Alcohol and Levels by Joe Boy and Flavour respectively.

‘Nmandi Kanu Biafra’, was also a top searched term by Nigerians who were interested in the ongoing trial of the pro-Biafra political activist and the adjournment of his court case until November 10 by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Secondus: Wike hails Appeal Court decision on PDP’s convention

medical tourism
Governor Nyesom Wike

By Davies Iheamnachor – Port Harcourt

The Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, says no individual, including the suspended chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, can thwart the mission of the party to rescue Nigeria from bad leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Wike, who spoke in Port Harcourt in reaction to the Court of Appeal dismissal of Secondus’ application that sought to stop the PDP convention and restate him as the national chairman of the party, said that Secondus’ attempt to scuttle the PDP national convention makes him an enemy of the party.

He stated that the PDP mission to rescue Nigeria is a commitment that will not be compromised because of the mess the APC has made of Nigerian State, pointing out that it is clear that PDP would not allow any individual or group of individuals to derail its rescue mission as captured by the theme of the convention.

Wike said: “What Secondus is doing is to sabotage the efforts of Nigerians, the efforts of PDP from rescuing this country from the hand of the party that has failed the country. And it is not fair.

“This is a party that has given you everything and there’s nothing wrong in making sacrifice. Even if, assuming though not conceding, that anything was wrong, we expected that having achieved what you have achieved in your life from this party, there is nothing wrong in making sacrifice.

“If you make sacrifice for the party, you’re making sacrifice for Nigerians. If PDP is not there, which other party is ready to rescue Nigeria.”

Governor Wike clarified that the Court of Appeal did not only dismiss the application of Secondus, but it also ordered that the PDP National convention be conducted unrestrained.

“Our constitution provides that if a national chairman is removed, the deputy national chairman from that zone will immediately be the chairman or acting chairman as the case may be.

“And so, when Secondus was removed, he handed over to the acting national chairman now. So, the act has already been done, completed. So, what will the court say when someone is already acting and supervising that office,” he said.

It’s for Nigerians, South-West PDP celebrates Appeal Court judgment against Secondus

It’s for Nigerians, South-West PDP celebrates Appeal Court judgment against Secondus

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, South-West Zone, has said the Appeal Court judgment that set aside the application of ousted former National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, was not just victory of the party, but for Nigerians given its significance ahead of the 2023 elections.

The party made its celebration known in a statement by Chief Rahman Owokoniran, the General Secretary of the zone.

It added that, as a party that has a mission of rescuing Nigerians from bad governance in 2023, today’s Appeal Court ruling further strengthens its belief in democracy.

Owokoniran added that all usurpers and ingrates would be weeded off the party so that its unity will not be compromised.

The judgment

Vanguard reported that that reading the decision of the court on behalf of the panel, Justice Gabriel Kolawole said granting Secondus’ prayers would cause inconveniences.

He noted that greater justice would be done by refusing the application of the appellant (Secondus) to stop the convention, or annulling the decision of the lower court.

“The appellant (Secondus) motion fails and is hereby dismissed.

“The sixth respondent (PDP) is empowered to hold its convention without hindrances,” he read.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, bemaoned that Secondus had remained silent since he was sacked and his office taken without saying a word.

The court held that his late move was to take a shot at the national convention. Read the full story HERE.

Reacting, the party’s South-West scribe, Rahman Owokoniran, said: “On behalf of PDP South, we congratulate PDP as a whole on the victory at the Appeal Court against Prince Uche Secondus.

“This is not just victory for PDP, it is victory for Nigerians and Nigeria’s democracy as we mach towards 2023 general elections.

“Justice will always prevail. How can a man who has benefited so much from the party seek to destroy it?

“We thank God for throwing out the usurper.

“PDP believes greatly in democracy and we only welcome those that are ready to help repair Nigeria, not sink it further.

“Today marks another victory for PDP and Nigeria. We shall weed out all the usurpers in our great party.”

Shina Abubakar – Osogbo

Management of Obafemi Awolowo University has disclosed that the school will reopen on Friday, November 5, 2021 for students to complete the disrupted 2019/20 second semester examination.

The school was shut after the students embarked on protest on September, 30, 2021, over the death of a 400-level Foreign Languages Student, Adesina Aisat who died at Seventh Day Hospital after brief illness.

A statement issued by the school’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, on Friday, stated that the decision to reopen the school was taken at an emergency senate meeting, held on Friday, October 29, 2021.

The release further stated that the students would come to residence on Friday, 5th November, 2021 and continue with their examinations on Saturday, 6th of November, 2021 in tandem with what was previously on ground.

“Parents and guardians are hereby advised to inform their children and wards, particularly those who have already finished their examinations to stay at home so that none of them would use the excuse of the reopening of the University to do something untoward.

2023: North lists criteria for presidential candidates

Rejects aged aspirants

As buildup to the 2023 fresh elections, Northern Nigerian leaders and youth have warned that any political party that fields an aged, incompetent, or incapable candidate should forget the region’s votes.

Making this known at the Maitama Sule Leadership Lecture Series  organised by the Students Wing of Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) Borno State chapter, on 28th October, 2021, spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed  warned that the North will turn its back on any party that deliberately and specifically tilts advantages to candidates from particular regions.

The next President, according to the NEF spokesperson, should emerge from a credible election from any part of the country, but he or she must be first and foremost a Nigerian President and those Northerners with ambition to run for the office should know that Northern Elders Forum, Coalition of Northern Groups and many others are not merely supporting the emergence of a Northerner to succeed President Buhari.

He reminded the rest of the country that the North does not need to flash its scorecard on commitment to national unity and the democratic process and that it has paid a huge price for the unity and survival of this country, for which it has no regrets.

The North, he said, has never been a parasite in Nigeria, and while the North believes that it serves all interests to stay as one united country, it will however be “difficult for us  to continue to defend our co-existence if it can only be achieved at our permanent expense.”

He said those who should question their own commitments are people who threaten to leave the country or make it ungovernable if the next President does not bear all the hallmarks of their preferences.

“The rest of Nigeria has a legitimate cause of concern when sections  of the country that have become virtual hostages of irredentists, suggest that only when they have the Presidency will the country eliminate organized violence that has made massive inroads into lives of Nigerian citizens living there.

Taking a swipe at President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration,  he said it has dropped the ball in the manner it had allowed insecurity, irredentism, corruption, poverty, national cohesion, unemployment of the young  and faith in the democratic process to become a way of life in Nigeria today.

READ ALSO: I won’t stay beyond May 29, 2023, Buhari warns tenure extension advocates

He noted that with the unglorifying record of performance of the Buhari administration, which many mischievously see as solely a Northern creation, Northerners are also deeply skeptical that being Northern alone is not enough to make a good leader.

Therefore, he said, the  state of the North today represents the best caution that what you see as yours is not necessarily the best where you have a choice, and every Nigerian must have a choice.

“If a Northerner is to become the next President with our votes in the North, then he has to be the best among all others. He has to convince us in the North that he understands our problems, and has the capacity to solve them. He must have the disposition, energy, health and intelligence to heal the breached pluralism of the North and build bridges across the entire nation.

“He has to be able to lead a country that is failing in a number of significant areas.A personal ambition to be President will not be enough, and we will scrutinize and advise those who will listen, to avoid the temptation to put in place persons who just want power, but not responsibility.

“A president from the North must have the exposure and network to reintegrate all parts of Nigeria into one country and one vision. He must have the courage to eliminate threats of insurgents, bandits, kidnappers, irredentists, impunity, the drugs pandemic and corruption.

“He must lead with a sense of mission and urgency; the wisdom to negotiate where necessary and the clout to hit hard  where he needs to; and a clear understanding of the sources and nature of our threats and their solutions,” he said.

“The point must be made again that every Nigerian, irrespective of his political party or identity must be free to contest within his or her party to be fielded as a Presidential candidate, and we should reject any party that specifically and deliberately excludes any Nigerian from exercising the same right other Nigerians have,” he said.

Backing this position, another speaker at the event, Hajiya Najatu Mohammed charged the youth to rise and confront the challenges of regaining control of their destiny, urging them not to rely anymore on the shaky path being laid by those who pose as Nigerian leaders today.

She lamented that those in position of leadership are people who are ill-equipped and ill-prepared to lead but for their personal political ambitions and quest for criminal acquisition of wealth.

“The time to get organised is now, time to move by you, the youth, particularly students in higher institutions to wrest control of your affairs and rescue your generation and the next from the margins of decadence, decay and irrelevance being towed by our current leaders,” she said.

Similarly, Professor Usman Yusuf, former Executive Secretary of the NHIS, impressed the urgency for the youth to register massively as their only sure way to flush out those he called, bandits in government.

Professor Yusuf said those occupying positions of leadership today are worse than bandits as they breed banditry and nurture the ground for all forms of criminality by entrenching corruption, impunity, official lawlessness and excessive greed.

“This can only be remedied if the youth, particularly students in higher institutions massively acquire PVCs and participate actively in the campaign to sensitise the northern population to do so,” he said.

In response, the Board of Trustees Chairman of the CNG, Nastura Ashir Shariff warned the youth against risking their collective future in the hands of any of major political parties in the country presently.

He categorically warned that any of the major parties that fields incompetent, weak and aged candidate would be roundly rejected by the North and charged the youth to remain vigilant with regards to the direction the parties are conducting their affairs.
